Underwater Eggcase Hunting

Small-eyed ray eggcase: image (c) ian cheneryIf you’re spending time underwater this summer why not keep an eye out for underwater eggcases!  Never easy to spot – often camouflaged with seaweed, sand and gravel – the presence of underwater, in situ eggcases can be indicative of a nursery area for sharks, skates and rays.

Results from the Great Eggcase Hunt have given us a pretty good understanding of where eggcases wash up around our coastline. Now it is time to link the beach records with actual nursery
grounds on the seabed.

Remember to take only photographs as eggcases
are likely to have live embryos inside.

The Shark Trust is encouraging divers to look out for eggcases on the seabed. So, next time you are out diving, look out for eggcases wrapped around seaweed or partially buried under sandy or gravelly substrates.

However we would like to hear about what you have found and also see your photographs.
Submit your report and images online here.
